In last year as of October 2025, she worked often in European and Canadian cities, such as London, Paris, Calgary and Cracow, mostly as instructor or choreographer on major dance events. Meanwhile she is considered as part of the American Dance High Society. As a young dancer and choreographer, she was mostly trained at Master Ballet Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona, but she didn't graduate and aborted her education. She had danced and was trained before by San Diego Dance Centre and Danceology Performing Arts Campus, both owned by her cousins, Kristen Hibbs and Nicole Lucia respectively. So Sophia thinks she was basically born into dance. She started at San Diego Dance Centre when she was two years old until she was 11 to be one day on Lifetime’s Dance Moms show. She is trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Ballroom, and Contemporary. Sophia moved to Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of twelve to train with Master Ballet Academy and later danced with the Phoenix Ballet and Ballet Arizona. When she was 8 she was already dancing 55 hours per week. Still today she has an average 9-10 hours working day. She did commercials, such as, for McDonald's, Old Navy, Party City and some promos for the Shirley Temple Story and A Nutcracker Christmas movies she was featured. In 2015, Sophia participated in a YouTube series named "Teen Dance Challenge" (Ep10 Sophia Lucia HD, EP9 Sophia BTS HD) alongside Talia Seitel, Lucy Vallely, Chloe East and Sean Lew. In December, she was announced as the winner by Instagram online voting of the grand prize of a one year scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City worth $30,000 USD, including full tuition and housing. In 2016, Sophia helped her dance partner William Jackson Beckham, a promising young dancer for the Sylvia Company, Japan, 16 at that time, out of competition - because she was under age limits from 15 to 19 (reg 1.2, because under 15 she violates the Bulgarian (EU) child labor laws; it`s death serious pro in Varna) and competitors may participate also with a partner who is not a competitor at all, when they perform a pas-de-deux or contemporary choreography where more than one performer is required (reg 1.7) - at her age of 13 took him home the Gold Medal and the First Class Distinction Diploma in Junior Division (first dance, second dance, third dance, fourth dance, fifth dance) at XXVI. Varna IBC 2016 and were representing the USA. They had trained and rehearsed about 8 months full-time for this event. But being the youngest performing at Varna IBC, she was awarded with a Special Bounty Partnership Award. Afterwards, Soph is considering herself a professional dancer. Jack won also the “Promising Young Dancer” award in Varna. As of 2018, he was promoted to main company at the Tusla Ballet in Oklahoma. Sadly he quited pro ballet dance later, maybe due injuries and has became a pilot. To understand, the Varna IBC is considered as the "Olympics of Professional Ballet and Contemporary Dancing", it was the very first professional ballet competition, which was hold every two years from 1964 to 2019. After Coronavirus, lack of sponsorship and changes in the local organization, and now the war in Ukraine putting a damper on Black Sea tourism. So they are on pause currently. About 40 countries had send up 150 of their most promising young dancers to the Bulgarian city. The faculty of Varna IBC were members of the best experts around the globe and also known as the toughest judges you can ever get, and because Ballet is an academic field in many countries, a lot had a professorship as well. So the Junior Winners don`t just won a medal, they get strait a First and Second Class Distinction Diploma. It´s like `how to get a college degree summa cum laude within 15 days`. The most prestigious Ballet companies and theaters on the world requested the winners become a member in their ensembles, because many winners of the Varna IBC, such as, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova, Sylvie Guillem, Vladimir Vasiliev, Natalia Bessmertnova, Patrick Dupont, Yassen Valchanov, Vladimir Derevyanko, Farukh Ruzimatov, Alla Mikhalchenko etc, became the world`s best and finest ballet dancers at their times. And to give outsiders a feeling how Ballet is rated. If you ask any pro dancers around the world about their open top 10 list of the best dancers of all time, the structure is always the same: Nine from Ballet plus Michael Jackson. Soph got a lot of job offers around the world after the Varna IBC as well, including Broadway, but she had no idea how to use them at her young age. When the faculty of Varna IBC gave her the Special Bounty Partnership Award, they told her properly how talented she is and how she was unofficially rated, when she had been allowed officially to compete. So the 13 years old ambitious Sophia, who was dragged through the TV shows as World Record Holder when she was ten and had never school class mates in a regular school due homeschooling to keep her grounded, couldn't resist, started bragging and exaggerated the event a little bit and stick in it for years: "... when I won the Gold Medal in Varna ..."(Interview in 2019). And then it got a dynamic by its own, when people framed her words in her resume in Gold as well and distributed it around the world and then suddenly US Ballet Officials knocked on her door and asked her, if she minded to represent the US worldwide abroad as the "Gold Medal winner of Varna". And Sophie took event by event and kept silence about some small details. But since her young success in the Ballet industry, she’s had the honor to perform worldwide representing the USA as a "Gold Medalist". Sophia and her partner went on and received a Silver Medal with "Path" pas-de-deux in contemporary dance at YAGP nationals in New York City, shortly before Sophia won first place in contemporary dance category and Jackson the Grand Prix round in San Diego, CA. After then she made her acting debut in Hallmark’s “A Nutcracker Christmas,” portraying a young ballerina with aspirations to become a prima ballerina (Sneak Peak) - Screen Impressions. During her time filming, she continued to train and dance with the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto. Maddie Ziegler and Siwa were attending the premiere after Sophia invited them. At age 13, she portrayed the Harlequin Doll in Phoenix Ballet's production of The Nutcracker at Orpheum Theatre. She has earned several National Champion Dance Titles, such as The Dance Awards’s Junior Best Dancer 2014. From a young age, she has been featured in numerous television shows such as ‘Dancing with the Stars and she got the honor to perform on The Finale,’ ‘So You Think You Can Dance (Ukraine),’ - because for SYTYCD USA she had to be at least 18. Age limits were such fun killers in Soph`s career, but on January 2016 Sophia auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Her appearance was televised on the show's season premiere without that age limits. She made it past the audition stage, but did not get past the Academy round, as Ruby Castro was chosen over her. She performed also Disney’s hit show Shake it Up, X-Factor, Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn and America's Got Talent, plus several talk shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Ricki Lake Show, to name a few. She made her film debut in 2010 as child star icon, Shirley Temple in the Fox Legacy Movie The Shirley Temple Story. That Sophie got chosen was not a fluke, because when she was first time covering Shirley she was two. Sophia got homeschooled since class one, but she visited about a year a private school at the age of 15, to get in contact with some peers to process her mobbing experience. But she felt she doesn't fit in and noone really would understand her. She felt lonely and it would made it acually worse. She thinks, because she got pro at such young age and was already travelling abroad so many times, she got much faster mature than her class mates, who didn't really understand her problems. She got her high school diploma at the age of 16 and went first to a community college for the next two years, because she was only 16 when she graduated and not ready to live by herself in New York yet, before she has finally transferred to a four-years university, when is was 18. She stated she will majoring in psychology at the New York University (NYU). Ahhh... self-diagnostics. Her high school diploma is just recognized outside California since she graduated college (see also CHSPE) and as to remember the corona quarantine measurements peaked at that time, especially in New York City, which had for sure an effect on her education as well. On March 2023, she said she went actually to the University of Arizona at the age of 18. She was studing psychology. Her goal was to become a sports pychologist and work with child prodigies, like she herself was, and try to avoid that they have to go through the same crap. The graduated as Bachelor with 20. She wanted go to on Master, but she wanted to dance and dropped it. She studied psychology, but we don't know if a bachelor degree is enough being allowed call oneself psychologist. At the University she was a loner and a geek as well, while many of her college mates had more parties, sex and drugs in mind. Especially the penetrant attempts of some people trying out some drugs made her really pissed. She prefers still today being at home after working and is going out mostly with her boyfriend. She said beyond him, she considers just two girls as her true friends, the rest are more or less down to a degree of being acquaintances. Soph danced also many times as a philanthropist, such as for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Jerry Lewis' MDA Telethon, and the former Lily Sarah Grace Foundation, which supported once to establish practicing arts in classrooms, for cognitive development both together with many other dance talents like Kaycee Rice & Sierra Neudeck and KAR TV's I'm a Dancer Against Cancer with Madison Curtis. She supported many charities. She thinks it’s very important to give back and is such an eye opening thing, which makes you grow as a human being and granted also one of her hard core fans a wish. She also had a clothing line with California Kisses Dance Wear and a partnership with Capezio. In last years she modeled many times. Of course, the beauty looks great in everything, and hot! She has merchandise lines with different business partners for clothing now. Sophia spent a short time at the beginning of the 2012-2013 competition season competing with the Abby Lee Dance Company, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Producers asked her for years and her mom wanted them to stop calling so they finally did the show but left because they didn’t want to be locked into a contract. While there, Sophia filmed several episodes of Dance Moms season 3. On the show, she was featured as a member of the ALDC's junior elite competition team, as well as the ALDC replacement team. However, this only lasted for a few episodes before Sophia and her mother went back home to compete with San Diego Dance Centre again, because her grandfather had a heart attack with 70 and the family wants to be with him, and her mom felt also that the development of the story line on season three could gave her daughter a negative image and development and didn't like the environment of the show. But Sophie herself didn't and had just positive memories. She loved her time at dance moms and Abby and the other kids were really sweet and welcoming her. Sophia stayed in contact with Maddie Ziegler, Nia Frazier, Kalani Hilliker and Siwa and became a good friend with Maddie. She said that Abby was one of the kindest, warm hearted people she ever met and she still comments on her Instagram posts, although she had in last years quite serious problems. In last years she developed more and more a passion for teaching, especially technique classes. For any ages and on any levels, from bloody beginners to master students and has been all over the country teaching her technique method called RAFT for turns - Rectangle (shoulder-shoulder-hip-hip-), Arch (highest evaluation when on arch), Focus (of own eyes) and Tight (keep tight with rectangle, arch and focus on body when moving). She posted a lot of her private lessons with kids on her Instagram account. She is really good with kids and asked them the most important question: "Where is your confidence?" End of 2016 Sophie stopped competing, the official reasons were, after she got pro at such a young age and competed for everything a dancer could compete for and won so many dance titles she cannot gain much more by still competing. Some owners asked her also not to compete. because she would make some kids nervous that they had withdrawn before they even entered the stage. Some episodes of Dance Moms might be the reason for this which gave her an image as Sophia the Destroyer. The kids don't realize, the show was following a script and it has nothing to do how she is actually like. Unofficially she actually hated competing. She said she disliked the competitive atmosphere and the pressure that was put on her to be perfect. When Soph was somewhere between 5-10 years old she used to cry after every performance. She said she was scared that people laughing at her and her mistakes being recorded for everyone to see. Sophia had later thrown away all her awards and trophies, except the Guinness World record plague and her Varna award. - Yup! The "Dust Catcher Crisis" has everyone, who was a long time very competitive, about these useless, space stealing things just for ego reasons. - Sophia also used to have to meditate before every performance or she would get a panic attack. So one of her dance teacher gave her a new toy/clay/glass frog before every performance and Soph used to kiss its belly and said a prayer as her good luck tradition. FROG would stand for "Fully Rely on God". In 2021, she said winning a competition doesn't mean anything to her now. Since 2015, she started experiencing the more unpleasant side of being famous, like many young dance superstars when they are praised to the stratosphere and then struggling for oxygen, because nothing has remaining substance. They value of fame is what is left on daily basis in her booking schedule as return and Soph experienced often that the old, used sources went dry due her fame, while potentially new opportunities came bursting like bubbles - the typical pro dancers life. So she started teaching kids and it gave her some stability by doing some routine, and of course, the kids lionizing her, including this big one. Then some people around her got envious, mean and used their elbows, while other used her for egoistic reasons, so that Soph resumed at the end; not many true friends are left and spent most of her free time by reading books, watching TV series and movies. In 2019, she described herself as a loner yet. But she experienced already some unpleasant mobbing at the Master Ballet Academy (MBA), because she got some weight and the males were too weak to lift her and gave her mean nicks. She was in Ballet always referred as "The Big One" except at the MBA, there was "The Fat One". Many girls when going into puberty they get a little chubby just by hormonal imbalance without changing any eating or activity habits, and it normalizes within one or two years, except they got bullied and start feeding because they are depressed now. So the MDA and others forced her to do constantly some diet just for training despite her nature. This bullshit happens often in the dance industry. The working atmosphere stayed toxic so that Soph felt like she met Gunnery Sergeant Hartman and she wanted to quite pro dancing at all. Regarding Soph her dance teacher joined and insulted her on daily basis for two years (see fun facts). She considers her experience at the MBA as really dark time. But also interesting, when Soph was younger she said she was pretty much best in every class and able to do any move and turning sequence put in her routine easily, but when she joined MBA, she said she was the worst in ballet in her class. She found it quite refreshing have people to look up to. - Again, this girl did Varna 1.5 years later. After a winner celebration at Varna she said it was one of her longest moments. No one to celebrate it with at a peak of her career. No one to talk about with. Soph wrote in 2022, she was starting to learn to let her body be whatever it’s going to be; and her metabolism as athlete does the rest, and maybe a little workout with her fitness trainer and bestie Ambry Mehr. Maybe a session went this way: S:"I have no time for this bullshit. What is your rate again? ... Oh, that much. Maybe I should go to college, majoring psychology and doing your job." - T:"Perfect. Therapy worked. Mental health restored. Now I can raise my rate for next time." -S:"Now I see how it works." - T: "Excellent! Now I will charge you an extra fee, because you wanted also learn to distinguish between who can be trusted and who is using you." But it finally ended with her third boyfriend. With him she started going out more often and partying a lot. Finally a social life and happy end. She celebrated her 20th birthday with some of her closest friends and was teaching her guests: Pirouettes! No therapy in the world can get this out of her. In 2018, she tried to start with a singing career. The music video "Ain't Gonna Play (Official Video) feat. theweiszest" was released on YouTube and the Streams on Spotify and iTunes. They were not exactly chart breakers. Interesting, because as kid she was often mocked for her Mickey Mouse voice. Her therapist encouraged her to start writing her feelings down on paper. He suggested like a “dear diary” type of thing, but she found that super cheesy and started writing poetry instead. And her dad thought her poetry was good, so he mentioned writing a song and contacted a family friend to make a song with her. “Ain’t Gonna Play” is the very first one that she wrote and felt comfortable putting out there. The song is about a boy, who she was very much into and caused her a lot of pain. She wasn’t one for conflict and would just let the things go. The song was her outlet to say anything that she didn’t have the courage to say it to him in person. It’s about young love. Not just when your first relationship gone bad, but the stuff girls generally go through with boys. She had a thing with this boy for months and he kept telling her how much he liked her, and how he wanted to be with her, but then would run off with any of girl, while she was away. But in general, guys lead girls on way too much and that’s why she thought, it’s relatable to girls of her age. She wanted do more music. She worked also on her acting career and took acting lessons. Her dream was to become lead actress in a teen drama show. Still these days Soph is keen for being a top cast or lead actress on a successful movie or TV show. (Lengel, Kerry's critics for AZCentral of the Nutcrackers' in Phoenix Range from So-So to Spectacular) ===By Sophia=== *"realizing i moved out on my own at 18 ... now i'm an adult and have to do anything by my own ... make rent ... build credit .. live alone ... actually pay my bills ... pay taxes ... stay healthy ... pay rent on time ... cook ... not to be afraid of the dark ... being an actual adult ... not call my rents everytime something goes wrong ... alone with my cats forever ... adulting at its finest ... i take it back ...mon, dad, i wanna move back in" (Sophia's TikTok comedy live from the first days in her new flat on July 2021 in LA. - That was fast. I think the word “famous” is an overrated label! I’m a normal teenager who does normal teenager things. Same with every “famous” person. With that said, I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had die to being well known in the world! When girls or boys come up to me and ask for a picture, it’s still surreal to me. It’s hard for me to contemplate that girls and boys think of me the way I think of Lana Del Rey or Harry Styles. It’s such an honorable feeling and honestly feel very blessed." (Sophia's Naluda Magazine Interview 2018) *"Believe in yourself. Don’t just work hard, work smart." (Soph's advice for young dancers) *When she was asked if she ever get nervous, she answered: ""All the time. I’m a very anxious person and I’ve had to overcome a lot of things, but nerves never go away." *"Dance world is really tricky. It's really unhealthy. There is so many unhealthy people in the dance world. There are a lot of toxic people and there are a lot of people, they want not be supportive. And it want not to be a very supportive community. "It's seems to be supportive". Everyone says they are supportive to each other, but they are really not. Everyone is just out to get, what is best for them. And when you are succeeding and they are not, they are not really happy for you and vise versa. That how it is. There was like I felt like there is not a lot of support around me and I felt like because I had so much success at the young age that people just cannot stand it. That's fine, but it made it really hard for me. Beyond that, there is a lot of body image issues that come being in the dance world, whether or not is praised, said there are gone or that happened any more, it does! I gone through every dance struggle you could possibly imagine and every dance struggle I ever had, people told me I have to lose weight and I was this big *showing a cycle with tumb and pointing finger*. ... It took me really a long time to learn to be mental stable, but how you can do that is with a good support system and really try to stay grounded, and know a lot of stuff in the dance world then don't mean anything to you in a few years. I know what was a big deal for me then is not a big deal for me now. Winning that competition doesn't mean anything to me now. Nothing. Like, it's so interesting, because you move yourself in a situation, oh my god, everything seems so big. It's really not a big deal. So being much easier to yourself, because you do it because you love it and you cannot listen to any other noice. That's what I think. And that's I think how I get a healthy relationship with dance and being in the dance world. But it took me out of it so long. Hmm I was like, "I destroyed my fandom.", I guess you might can say. - Not you, because you guys are here. You guys are so awesome. - "I destroyed my fandom and my name in a sence", like many people told me that all the time, but my mental health was at risk and I think quiting dance for three years I did and remove myself from the dance world, was the best thing I had ever done for myself, because it told me how to be normal and it told me have a healthy relationship with myself. And I think that has to come always first and if not; take a step back and look at it for what it is and don't put not to much pressure on you to do or be a certain way and know that everything comes at time. Completed 4 in row when she was 5, and kept going on. In 2020, she got asked, if she can do world record again these days. She answered, she could, but it would hurt her. When she was training to break the world record she was turn so fast and so much on daily basis that she started to break blood vessels in her hands. Her hands would turn purple, swell and itch if she tried to turn that fast now. She said for pirouettes it`s all about physics and science - spot and momentum. Sophie did more turns, but Simrin did it longer. She was also challenged many time by dance battles, such as Contemporary Eric at Industry Dance Awards 2014. *When Russian National Champion, head coach and owner of RG school in San Diego - Champion Rhythmics "Murder" Masha Weitz (Маша Калужская) tortured Sophia in her training, she was pregnant with her daugther Zoya. Entry is reserved for young student-dancers, aged 15 through 18, who have not yet been in professional employment and open to candidates of all nationalities. So Soph would be too young again at that time, further she was already pro. Currently, participants are required to submit a 15–20 min digital file recording showing them performing a combination of barre and centre-work exercises in a studio environment and pay a registration fee in CHF (150 CHF in 2024), but for 2025, thanks to generous sponsors, the Prix de Lausanne can offer financial support to candidates who may be in need. Applicants must contact the Prix de Lausanne to communicate their intention to apply for financial support before their registration for the video selection. The video selection jury panel, consisting of nine professionals from the dance world, gathered in Lausanne last weekend to watch all video submissions. There were 445 applicants (354 girls and 91 boys) from 42 countries who sent their videos. A total of 75 dancers (38 girls & 37 boys) have been selected via this process while 11 candidates had already been preselected.
