Nicknames Soph
Sophie

She is holding the Guinness Book world record by completing 55 consecutive pirouettes at the San Diego Dance Center in Poway, California, USA on 30 March 2013 at the age of 10.[3][4]

As a young dancer and choreographer, she was most recently trained at Master Ballet Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona. She had danced and was trained before by San Diego Dance Centre and Danceology Performing Arts Campus, both owned by her cousins, Kristen Hibbs and Nicole Lucia respectively.

She started at San Diego Dance Centre when she was 2 years old until she was 11 to be one day on Lifetime’s Dance Moms show. She is trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Ballroom, and Contemporary. Sophia moved to Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of twelve to train with Master Ballet Academy and later danced with the Phoenix Ballet and Ballet Arizona.

A year later, Sophia helped her dance partner William Jackson Beckham, a promising young dancer for the Sylvia Company, Japan, 16 at that time, out of competition - because she was under age limits form 15 to 19 (reg 1.2, because under 15 she violates the Bulgarian (EU) child labor laws; it`s death serious pro in Varna) and competitors may participate also with a partner who is not a competitor at all, when they perform a pas-de-deux or contemporary choreography where more than one performer is required (reg 1.7) [5] - at her age of 13 took him home the Gold Medal and the First Class Distinction Diploma in Junior Division [6] (first dance, second dance, third dance, fourth dance, fifth dance) at XXVI. Varna IBC 2016 and were representing the USA. They had trained and rehearsed about 8 months fulltime for this event. But being the youngest performing at Varna IBC, she was awarded with a Special Bounty Partnership Award.[7] Afterwards, Soph is considering herself a professional dancer. To understand, the Varna IBC is considered as the "Olympics of Professional Ballet and Contemporary Dancing", it was the very first professional ballet competition, which is hold every two years since 1964 (2020 was an exception due Coronavirus and lack of sponsorship). About 40 countries send up 150 of their most promising young dancers to the Bulgarian city. The faculty of Varna IBC are members of the best experts around the globe and also known as the toughest judges you can ever get, and because Ballet is an academic field in many countries, a lot have a professorship as well. So the Junior Winners don`t just win a medal, they get strait a First and Second Class Distinction Diploma. It´s like `how to get a college degree summa cum laude within 15 days`. The most prestigious Ballet companies and theaters on the world request the winners become a member in their essembles, because many winners of the Varna IBC, such as, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova, Sylvie Guillem, Vladimir Vasiliev, Natalia Bessmertnova, Patrick Dupont, Yassen Valchanov, Vladimir Derevyanko, Farukh Ruzimatov, Alla Mikhalchenko etc, became the world`s best and finest ballet dancers at their times. And to give outsidern a feeling how Ballet is rated. If you ask any pro dancers around the world about their open top 10 list of the best dancers of all time, the structure is always the same: Nine from Ballet plus Michael Jackson.

When the faculty of Varna IBC gave her the Special Bounty Partnership Award, they told her properly how talented she is and how she was inoffically rated, when she had been allowed officially to compete. So the 13 years old ambitious Sophia, who was dragged through the TV shows as World Record Holder when she was ten and had never school class mates in a regular school due homeschooling to keep her grounded, couldn`t resist, started bragging and exaggerated the event a little bit and stick in it for years: "... when I won the Gold Medal in Varna ..."(Interview in 2019). And then it got a dynamic by its own, when people framed her words in her resume in Gold as well and distributed it around the world and then suddenly US Ballet Officials knocked on her door and asked her, if she minded to represent the US worldwide abroad as the "Gold Medal winner of Varna". And Sophie took event by event and kept silence about some small details.[8] But since her young success in the Ballet industry, she’s had the honor to perform worldwide representing the USA as a "Gold Medalist".

Sophia and her partner went on and received a Silver Medal with "Path" pas-de-deux in comtemporary dance at YAGP nationals in New York City, shorly before Sophia won first place in comtemporary dance category and Jackson the Gold Medal for winning the Grand Prix round in San Diego, CA.[9] [10] [11] After then she made her acting debut in Hallmark’s “A Nutcracker Christmas,” portraying a young ballerina with aspirations to become a prima ballerina. During her time filming, she continued to train and dance with the National Ballet of Canada.

She has earned several National Champion Dance Titles, such as The Dance Awards’s Junior Best Dancer. From a young age, she has been featured in numerous television shows such as ‘Dancing with the Stars and she got the honor to perform on The Finale,’ ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ Disney’s hit show ‘Shake it Up,’ ‘X-Factor,’ Nickelodeon’s ‘Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn’ and ‘America’s Got Talent’, plus several talk shows like ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and ‘The Ricki Lake Show,’ to name a few. She made her film debut in 2010 as child star icon, Shirley Temple in the Fox Legacy Movie “The Shirley Temple Story”. Sophia’s ability to not only captivate an audience with her artistry, but inspire others with her teaching style is truly profound. She has formed a passion for teaching over the last few years and has been all over the country teaching her technique method called RAFT for turns. [12] [13]

Sofia got homeschooled since class one and got her highschool diploma and went first to a community college, because she was only 16 and not ready to live by herself in New York yet, for the next two years before she has transfered to a four-years university when is was 18. She wanted majoring in psychology.[14] Ahhh ... self-diagnostics.

Sophia also had a clothing line with California Kisses Dance Wear and a partnership with Capezio.

Sophia spent a short time at the beginning of the 2012-2013 competition season competing with the Abby Lee Dance Company, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While there, Sophia filmed several episodes of Dance Moms season 3. On the show, she was featured as a member of the ALDC's junior elite competition team, as well as the ALDC replacement team. However, this only lasted for a few episodes before Sophia and her mother went back home to compete with San Diego Dance Centre again, because her grandfather had a heart attack with 70 and the family wants to be with him, and her mom felt also that the development of the story line on season three could gave her daugther a negative image. But Sophie herself didn*t and had just positive memories.

In January 2016, Sophia auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. Her appearance was televised on the show's season premiere. She made it past the audition stage but did not get past the Academy round, as Ruby Castro was chosen over her.

As of July 2022, Sofia has 1.4M+ Instagram followers.

Fun Facts

  • As of July 2022, Sophia has a boyfriend. They had their second anniversary at end of June.[15] He is a dance instructor.
  • Sophia completed her first pirouette when she was 4. Completed 4 in row when she was 5, and kept going on. In 2020, she got asked, if she can do world record again these days. She answered, she could, but it would hurt her. When she was training to break the world record she was turn so fast and so much on daily basis that she started to break blood vessels in her hands. Her hands would turn purple, swell and itch if she tried to turn that fast now. She said for pireouttes it`s all about physics and science - spot and momentum. Still these days she can do 8-9 pirouettes on call without moving a muscle in her face. [16] [17]
  • Soph got challenged a couple times about her record. E.g. on Dancepalooza she had a turn contest against break dancer Simrin Player, who turned on her head. Sophie did more turns, but Simrin did it longer. [18]
  • When Russian National Champion, head coach and owner of RG school in San Diego - Champion Rhythmics "Murder" Masha Weitz (Маша Калужская) tortured Sophia in her training, she was pregnant with her daugther Zoya. Many years later, Soph got her hand on Zoya during her training and had in a strange ways her revenge. [19]
