Choi Sung-woo began learning street dance at the age of five and a half and started breaking at the age of six.[8] "He was often ill when he was young, so I took him to attend a street dance course on the recommendation of a relative," said HolyRain's mother 宋春秀 (Song Chunxiu) in an interview to China Daily. "I just wanted to improve his physical strength." At first, as Shengyu was too young and "naughty", he often failed to concentrate in the class and couldn't keep up with the rhythm of the teacher However, he persevered and demonstrated his talent and interest in breakdancing, his mother said.
Under the guidance of 包博 (Bao Bo), a member of the Jilin Dance Association's Street Dance Committee, he made great progress. After practicing breakdancing for about two years, began to participate in domestic competitions and usually finishing in the top eight or top four. "The coach told me that my son performed even better at competitions than in regular practices," his mom said. "He has strong control over the rhythm of the live performance and excellent adaptability. I also find that he gets excited and exudes a strong presence onstage." He attended school in the morning and practices in the dance studio from afternoon until evening. "Thanks to his teachers, who also used their spare time to help him keep up with school courses, he can focus more on dancing," she said. However, just practicing hard is not enough for him. The key to success is improving efficiency. "During practice, I never think about anything else, but only focus on solving the issues pointed out by the coach," said Shengyu. "After explaining a concept, my coach asks me to consider how to better demonstrate a new difficult point or technique. Good dancers need to have their own ideas and creativity," he added.
Due to his outstanding physical abilities, he transitioned from amateur to professional training after just over a year of study. He subsequently attended Huigu School in the High-Tech Zone of Changchun City, Jilin Province, while maintaining a schedule of half-day academic studies and half-day dance practice with focus breaking. Holy Rain attended school in the morning and practices in the dance studio from afternoon until evening. He graduated in 2025. It is currently unknown if is proceeding any academics. Cui Shengyu's mother, 宋春秀 (Song Chunxiu), closed her shop to support her son's breakdancing training and overcoming financial hardship to accompany him during practice. His mother now encourages him to persevere in his efforts, striving towards the goal of becoming an Olympic champion. A real dance mom.
In 2020, the programme translated Master! I'm Going to Dance featuring Shengyu aired on four episodes. It is one of the spin-off programmes from the street dance talent show series This Is Street Dance. The show features three dance masters—Han Yu, Yu Yanlin, and Wang Chenyi—who live and train alongside 15 adorable street dance youngsters under the age of 12, guiding them through intensive dance training and daily challenges. In 2024, the variety programme translated Let's Start Dancing Season 2 was released, featuring him on nine episodes. ‘Let's Dance Season 2’ brought together 11 youth dance crews and 141 aspiring young dancers. Host Zhan Duo, alongside senior members Ao Ziyi, Wang Chenyi, and Huang Yubo from the Kaijiao Superstars, witnessed the participants' growth throughout the series. One guest star was Sean Lew (Clip). He showed already in his show Youth China - Welcome to Hip-Hop Shaolin by China Golden Eagle Cartoon Channel in 2021, that the force is strong in him.
From August 20 to 26, 2023, the second U15 World Student Summer Games were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Games is a comprehensive sports event with the highest level of junior high school age group in the world sponsored by the International Federation of Middle School Sports, held every two years. The Games set up archery, track and field, badminton, 3X3 basketball, sports dance, fencing and other 18 major events, with more than 2000 athletes and coaches and referees from 48 countries and regions to participate. At the evening of August 22, 2023 Beijing time, the Chinese team sports dance (persl dance) 13-year-old junior Shengyu finally won the sports dance (dancing) project champion by 6 times of 12 rounds of the competition, and won the first U15 World Student Summer Games breakdancing project gold medal for China. He was the first grader of Huigu School in the new high tech development district of Changchun City. He won first the Jilin Provincial Campus Street Dance Championships, and was promoted by the Provincial Department of Education to participate in the sports dance (Perdington Dance) selection competition at the 2nd U15 World Student Summer Games, winning the individual championship with a total score of first place and representing the country in the second U15 World Student Summer Games. At the WDSF Breaking for Gold (BfG) Youth World Championship Proto 2025 300 breakers competed from 48 countries.The pre-selection was from 192 BBoys and 101 BGirls for Top 64 KO battles. Since Top 16 every breaker is going through three rounds. The judges are from nine different countries and judging according five criteria (see below) - Olympics Channel - Breaking for Gold Youth Porto 2025. Shengyu didn't expect to win, because of his bad results at the WDSF BfG Asia Continental Championship in Shanghai, China 2025 when he finished sixth.

On September 26, 2025 Holy Rain won 1on1 breaking Cheonan International street Dance Championship x Nanterioubreak in Korea and is invited to 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 - Nanterious Break World Final Edition 5 on April 4, 2026 at Palais des Sports - Nanterre, France by that. On September 30, 2025, he won 3on3 SuperBreak China 2025 with his EEight fellows 상월비 단 (BBoy Sangwolbi Dan, KR) and 王圣博 (Wang Shengbo, Bboy LilKing, 14). Candy - LilKing at the age 12. On November 2, 2025, he competed as battle guest at the The Breaking World Cup in Marseille, France in Kids Category U16 and U18 on the Le Mondial du Breaking and has met Grom & Alvin again. Shengyu won the 1vs1 Kids BBoy competition against Maloy, Same stunts like Zurich. Grom & Alvin won 2vs2 against French Dee & Ankif. On November 13, 2025 the Skillmethodz crew, one of the world's most influencial breaking crews, celebrated their 30th anniversary and Ivan “Flipz” Velez birthday. Daniel Cloud remembered some of the very early days. They got at same day entered in the Hall of Fame of Hip-Hop exhibition by the crew award. To make sure their spirit of street dancing pass on, they awarded crew and dancers they think embodding it and Shengyu was awarded for the Freeze & Powermove side, his brother BBoy Madman (박우송) for Toprock side and his crew EEight for the crew side. On November 13-14, 2025 he won the Freestyle Session Youth Breaking Championships 2025 1vs1 against Dane BBoy Seier, #T4, #T8, #16. On November 17, Shengyu won also the Freestyle Session Youth 2on2 Breaking World Championship with his partner BBoy Sun ra from Miami. Further her got runner up with his friend 宋皓铭 (So Hao Ming) on the Freestyle Session Youth 2on2 Openstyle World Championship 2025 against his friends Miyu & Amy - All winners. Youth Olympic Summer Games Dakar 2026

editTo be eligible, athletes must be between 13 and 17 years old by the Games' closing ceremony, hold a World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) ID card, and have participated in a WDSF-approved competition in the 2025/2026 season. The event marks another appearance for Breaking on the Olympic stage after its debut at the 2024 Summer Youth Olympics in Gangwon4
Breaking is featured for the second time at the Summer Youth Olympics after making its debut at the 2024 Games in Gangwon. The World DanceSport Federation sees the Dakar 2026 event as a milestone for Breaking, calling it a "historic event" for youth Breaking.
The criteria of participation are: Be no older than 17 years and no younger than 13 years on the day of the closing ceremony (November 13, 2026). Possess a valid WDSF ID Card for the 2025/2026 season. Participate in at least one WDSF-approved Breaking competition listed in the 2025/2026 WDSF competition calendar. Hold a valid passport of the country they represent. Comply with all WDSF rules and regulations.
Qualification
editHow breaking is judged and scored in Olympics
editAn odd-numbered panel of judges score each round and each battle, and judge breakers’ performance based on five criteria:
- Technique: Certain moves have certain criteria, such as keeping feet flexed versus toes pointed on many moves. But technique also includes the judges’ view of how athletic the breakers are, and how well they control their bodies.
- Vocabulary: Breakers must perform a variety of moves in multiple positions—both in down rock and top rock—to score well here.
- Execution: While this may sound similar to technique, the World DanceSport Federation rule book says that on execution, breakers are judged on how cleanly their moves are performed—that is, they don’t mess up—and how distinct one more is from the next. The moves should flow together, but not blend together.
- Musicality: Here, breakers are judged on their ability to not just perform incredible moves, but to dance—staying on beat, and timing their moves to the music.
- Originality: Having that personal style is what sets people apart. It’s about what can one bring to the table and what can one add to breaking.
Instead of assigning a number to each of these criteria, judges use a digital slider, sliding towards the breaker who is winning the head to head matchup in that category. So if Breaker A is performing with better technique than Breaker B, judges will slide the slider towards their side—either a little bit, or all the way. Each of the five categories accounts for 20 percent of the final score. Based on the balance of the sliders in these five criteria, one breaker is declared the winner of each round.

editThe Huigu School is a nine-year consistent public school established by the Changchun High-tech Zone Management Committee in cooperation with Jilin University. It is located at the intersection of Chaoqi Street and Creative Road in the High-tech Zone of Changchun City, Jilin Province, and is an important guarantee and livelihood project for the introduction of talents, construction and stability of expert teachers for double first-class construction, meeting the needs of faculty and staff, and improving the quality of life of employees.
